This 'ancient' photograph taken in 1947, recalls a cricket match played at North Point. Because I am of that vintage (well - perhaps a mite younger) names of Victoria boys are familiar. The score? You don't want to know ... but, I'll tell you anyhow!

St. Joseph's North Point - Total (for 4 wickets) 224 Victoria School ... 56

Victoria's X1 ... . Q. Badiali. A. Fisher. A. Frost. D. Davies. D.Loving. B. Dozey. G. Baddely. G. Barton. (not out) W. Copley. B. MacLeod. W. Baker.

A photo of the Victoria School Army Cadets, in all their splendour, that came via Sally, from Grace Pereira. I have trimmed a fair bit off the photo. In the original it certainly looks like VS.

An email from George Watson 22 July 2002 states..

The photo is of the 1939 Victoria School cadet corp attached to the Northern Bengal Mounted Rifles (NBMR).

Here are some of the the names I recognised at once.

Front row from left:- Jackie Jacob(now governor of the Punjab); Reg Moulding (Jhundi); Cpl. Browne (Black Watch); Capt. Heywood(Dutchie, our PT instructor); Ernest Breese(Head Prefect) Dick Smart; George Bishop.

2nd row, from left:- George Watson(that's me); 8th over Peter Grout; 10th Leslie Buckle(baldy);

3rd row from left:- 4th over Jimmy Bayford; 6 over Ashley Moulding; 11 over Neville St.Romaine; I think the last one is Reg Stuart.

Let me work on this a bit more, some may come back to me.

I have a photo of the shooting team of that year and and all are here except I did not recognise Derek Hatton in the picture. He was on the shooting team. Give me time!

Thanks for making my day.

This, it is said, is Independence Day 1947

15 August 1947.

Note the IRVINE Pavilon halfway up the 'khudside'.

Cricket First X1 1930s.

Note the fine carving over the pavilion.

The pavilion is on the lower flat , used for cricket matches and also for Sports Day prize distribution.

If this is 1930, I'm not at VS yet, but I do recognise Vernie Prins with the cricket bat.(Stanley's dad).
Opposite him in the blazer, looks like Nobby Clarke(English master)

The crest is of the Bengal Government and is the Lion and Unicon. George Watson.

This is the Pliva Shield hockey team taken at North Point(St. Josephs). I don't know the date, but the team on the left is the VS team, our hockey shirts were Red and Blue with a Gold pocket. George Watson.

Does anyone know what church it it?

This a photo that I took in Novemeber 2001. It shows the original armoury building. The armoury is located under the staff accomodation. The house was where Murray-Smith lived for a while and also where Carl Bloud lived, when I was at VS.

The armoury has four doors, only two are visible in this photo.

Presently Radha and Devmani Moktan live in the house with their children.

George Watson writes....The armoury was at the end of the building where A&B dorms were, ie, the dhobes end. The rifles kept there were 303 calibre with 18" bayonets. The boots, putties, uniforms , and all the regalia for our
cadet platoon were stored there before issue to us.

There were special military sepoys who looked after the armoury and its contents.

Above the amoury in the early thirties Mr. Bailey(3rd std. master) stayed with his wife and two daughters. Later padre Elliot stayed there. After Sunday service if you were a alter server you had breakfast with padre Elliot and not a crumb was left. We were always ready for good grub.

ps. I remember a certain server having a good swig of the wine before service. If you read this you know who you are. I still rag him about it.

And a further note from Tim de Gruyther.

Just a follow-on. My Grandmother's father, Charlie Whitaker (ex-soldier), was in charge of the armoury for a while, and his wife worked as a matron. I suppose that means that my Grandmother must have been a student at DH. Certainly she arranged for my Father to go to VS. It was the mention of "Armoury" that prompted this rather pointless note!

An old photo of VS sent in by Sally.

A photo taken by me in 2001. It looks a lot better with the arches picked out in colour.

If you look down the front corridor, you an clearly see the two pedestals in front of the Hall. On one of these pedestals, I believe, there used to be a bust of Queen Victoria.

It wasn't there in my time. But I did see the bust last year (2001). It was located in the new Art room that is in the new Science Block.

A VS team from the 1930s. With 11 boys there and not a hockey stick or goalie pads in sight, it must be football team. Photo from Sally.

George Watson writes....

That's me second from the right. I have a similar photo to this, which is of the 1941 VS 1st XI Football team. What you see at the back is the goal net.

The team was , from the left standing:- Wally Wakefield; Ashly Moulding; Norman Smith; Dick Smart; (myself George Watson) ; Joe Shipman; Seated from left:- Khazi; David Greenhorn; Reg Stuart; Kersey Moddie; Owen Breese.

George Watson writes... 25 Jun 2004

The photo was taken in 1941 on the lower flat beside the cricket pitch. For some reason I am not in the picture. Yes, that is Punchie Lochner, a relation of Grace Periera. I seem to remember that you could only wear a school blazer if you were on any of the school teams. Those not in school blazers just have not got them yet.

Back row:- Grenyer, Moulding, John Lochner, Beaupert, Grout.

Seated:- Carapiet, Moddie, Smart, Greenhorn, Smith, Wakefield.

On ground:- Keelan.

For the life of me I can't think what team this is, because George Carapiet was the wicketkeeper of the 1st X1.

Sally writes, (9 July 2004).

DH &VS Debating Team - 1949

This is not a clear picture but perhaps someone could identify the 'Debaters' I don't know.

First girl top left (standing) = Mary Quinlan
Bottom row first girl (sitting) :?: Laken-Simon
Bottom row (sitting) third from left = Shereen Mehta.

The two boys in the back row look to be too young to take on Senior Cambridge girls?!

A de Havilland aircraft on the Maidan, Calcutta 1920s or 1930s.

My Grandparents went down to see it and the snap may have been taken by my Grandfather. It was the first aeroplane ever to arrive in Calcutta (India?) - I believe.

It landed on the Maidan and there was a great fuss.
