The Headmaster's Diary - 1952.

Victoria School - Kurseong.

20/02/1952

I took over the office today from Mr Paine.

1/03/1952

The P.W.D. have done a fine job of work this year with whitewashing, colour-washing and painting.

25/03/1952

A miserable day after a lovely winter. Messrs Paine and Ghosh brought up the first party (41) at 5 pm today.

3/03/1952

The second party (41) in the charge of Messrs Ross and Bhattacharjee arrived at about 5 pm today on a wretched day. I was obliged to send Mr Ross down from here to bring up this party, which on paper numbered well over 50. Though he had been informed that school reopened on March 2nd, Mr Hastings arrived only this evening.

There was no Masters here, therefore, to take duty today, Mr Bloud having been detailed to bring up an air party tomorrow. I shall ask Messrs Hastings and Chakravorty, who arrived this morning, for an explanation.

4/03/1952

The first air party with Mr Bloud in charge arrived at 2 pm.., and the second party (14 bigger boys, arrived at 8 pm).

No Science Master, no third standard Teacher, no Music teacher, and no Steward. A fine start!

Mr Green the new Steward is due at the end of this month. His wife arrived with the first party to take over the post of Matron of ‘C’ & ‘D’ Dormitories. Mr Singh, the new Hindi Master reported for duty on March 2nd.

The wretched cold, wet weather continues.

10/03/1952

Mrs White arrived in a thunder storm. She and her two boys arrived quite unexpectedly. The Inspector is said to have written to me but no letter has come in. She is to teach Std III. We started class this morning on a temporary and abbreviated timetable.

14/03/1952

Dow Hill went into quarantine for mumps and chicken pox about a week ago. Today we go into quarantine for mumps, one little chap from the Commercial being affected.

16/03/1952

A thunder storm last night and cloudy, damp, weather all day.

22/03/1952

All the schools in the district seem to have received their Cambridge results except ourselves, thanks to our efficient postal service here. I have therefore telegraphed the Inspector.

25/03/1952

A telegram was received form the Inspector to say all had passed the School Certificate – Exam, except Edwards. Very gratifying results considering this was a very weak class.

27/03/1952

The following are the results of the 1951 School Certificate Exam.

First Grade: L. Agabeg
Second Grade: A. Abraham, A. Footman, R. Farquhar.
Fourth Grade: S. Duke, D. McLeod, A. McKenzie, R. Pandychettri, G. West, J. West.

1/04/1952

The new Steward, Mr Green starts work.

5/04/1952

“Henry V” shown this evening. As Dow Hill are out of quarantine for chicken pox, their upper school attended the cinema show at Victoria in spite of the fact that they are still in quarantine for mumps, but then so are we.

9/04/1952

I heard the cuckoo this morning for the first time this year. It is rather late in the year. I was told he had been heard in Darjeeling 10 days ago.

I hand over the charge of the school to Mr A. W. Paine, Mathematics Master, this afternoon.

9/04/1952

I, Alfred William Percy Paine, took over charge of the school at 1 pm from Mr C. A. Price who is due to go on leave.

13/04/1952

A farewell dinner was held for in honour of Mr Price at 6.45 pm. After the dinner and speeches the boys gave a concert in the Assembly Hall. After the concert Mr Price wished the boys goodbye in the Assembly Hall and later the staff in my office. A presentation was made immediately after dinner.

16/04/1952

Mrs Gough joined the staff as matron of “Commercial”.

Mr Ross returned after being away on casual leave. It is rather a coincidence that the weather is at its worst when new members join the school. Mrs White came up in a thunder storm on 10th March and this afternoon, perhaps for Mrs Gough’s benefit, we had a heavy hailstorm.

The Catholic boys went into retreat at 7 pm. Farther Bakewell conducted the retreat.

17/04/1952

Edwards returned to school.

R.S. Roy came in as a boarder he having previously attended as a day scholar.

I held a meeting of the teaching staff in my office.

19/04/1952

D. Sakya (?) returned to school.

20/04/1952

“The Ghost Train” was shown at 6 pm. Dow Hill did not attend as they are once again in quarantine for chicken pox. We of course are daily sending up cases of mumps to the hospital.

21/04/1952

Mr Ghosh went on casual leave.

22/04/1952

The cricket XI with Rev. Solomon in charge went to St Paul’s. I received a phone call from the Padre saying that we had won by 4 wickets and that the team had put up a very creditable performance. The scores were St Paul’s 130, Victoria 131 for 6 wickets.

23/04/1952

The new boys were “picked up“ by the House Masters.

The school tuckshop started to function under the management of the Steward, Mr Green.

24/04/1952

Our cloudy weather continues but we are hoping it will soon clear to enable us to have some cricket fixtures.

Mr Bhattercharjee, the Bengali Master went on casual leave from the 25 April, having completed his duties for the day.

26/04/1952

A filthy afternoon. I did not give the last Saturday as a holiday as I felt that the boys would not be able to make the best use of a holiday, and as we were already working a period short each day I thought it would be in the interests of all if we did some work.

The Hon’ble Sri Jawharlal Nehru, Prime Minister passed through Kurseong on his way to Darjeeling at about noon. The school had been invited to line the cart road, together with other local schools, and cheer the Prime Minister on his way. Unfortunately the school being in quarantine for “mumps” the boys were unable to attend.

I had a request from Slacke and Henderson asking if they might drop History as they felt they would fail in it; they suggested they utilise the History periods for “brushing up” their other subjects. I told them I would consult Mr Higgins, the History Master, before giving my decision. It seems that of late History has become a dreaded subject in the school. Mr Higgins sent me a letter addressed to the D.P.I. withdrawing his resignation.

27/04/1952

Goethals “under 15” cricket elevens came over to play our own “under 15”. A most exciting match which resulted in a win for the visitors by 2 runs. Goethals 93, Victoria 91. Down came the rain immediately the match as won.

28/04/1952

Mr Roz, the new Science Master, joined the school. I showed him round the science room, and discussed with him the suitable books and courses for the classes. I have also made him teach elementary mathematics in the VII and VIII. The new time-table came into force from today.

1/05/1952

I addressed the senior and middle schools in the assembly hall at 6.45 pm. I spoke to them in general on their attitude towards their studies and games. This talk I felt was long overdue, as due to the shortage of staff at the commencement of term an atmosphere lacking in seriousness seemed to exist.

3/05/1952

St Paul’s cricket XI visited us and a fine days cricket was witnessed. St Paul’s 78, Victoria 79 for 5 wickets.

4/05/1952

A rainy morning.

The school under 15 cricket XI went over to Goethals but after numerous stoppages for rain the match was abandoned. We were more fortunate at home where Goethals first XI were our guests, rain did however, cause play to stop a number of times. Victoria 133, Goethals 55.

Dr McRory, the dentist from Smith Bros., came at 10 am. to attend to the boys. Eight boys and some staff received dental treatment.

“Way Ahead” was shown after evensong.

In the afternoon he spoke to the two top classes and showed them some of his sketches done in Malaya and India. In the evening Mr Carline gave a talk to the school on “Art”. He had previously told me that he was very favourably impressed with the art of the school and said it was being taught on the right lines.

12/05/1952

The “House Matches” commenced. Kellas Victoria Irvine.

14/05/1952

St Joseph's, North Point cricket XI visited us and fortunately we had a delightful day for cricket although it did not promise to do so earlier on in the morning. The match ended in a draw. Victoria 136, St Joseph's, North Point 110 for 8 wickets.

Due to the possibility of H.E. the Governor visiting the two schools on the 19th, the day fixed for the governing body meeting, I had to send express telegrams to the three members residing in Calcutta, proposing a postponement till 22nd May.

18/05/1952

Mr Bloud reported that an unpleasant incident occurred in Mrs White’s quarters, between Mrs White and Mrs Hastings.

19/05/1952

His Excellency , Dr. H.C. Mookerjee, Governor of West Bengal accompanied by Mrs Mookerjee visited the school from 11 am to 12.30 am. Their Excellencies seemed very interested in the school and after I had read them an address of welcome His Excellency gave the boys a short talk.

20/05/1952

A glorious sunny day most suited for the annual Staff Victoria Boys cricket match.
A holiday granted by His Excellency.

I spoke to Mrs White about the incident in her quarters to which the boys were witness and told her that Mr Hastings must on no account go to her quarters alone.

The cricket match ended in a surprising victory for the staff. Staff 137, Boys 77.

The prefects approached me for a Sunshine Holiday and as the day promised to be fine the school was given a holiday after the first period.

I received a telegram from Mr Ross asking for an extension of leave till Saturday. This is the second occasion on which Mr Ross has overstayed his leave. In the latter case I had expressed the urgency of Mr Ross returning on Wednesday before noon due to the staff position and told him that leave would only be granted provided he returned by Wednesday. It has meant non-supervision of Mr Ross’s classes, during the week and valuable periods lost with the Cambridge class where Mr Ross is responsible for Geography, Health Science and Scripture.

The boys (VI and upwards” were due to attend Goethals concert but at 3.45 pm I had to phone through telling Goethals that the boys would not be attending.

At about 7.30 pm our lights went off; I am wondering if once again we are to be plunged into a few weeks or months’ darkness.

23/09/1952

There is still no sign of the rain and breeze abating. The lights are still off at 8 am. It seems that a tank of the powerhouse has been damaged by a landslide and there is little likelihood of us getting electricity for another fortnight.

24/09/1952

26/10/1952

No night study as the lights were off and Mr Ghosh sent the boys up to the dormitories.

On enquiring about the previous nights study I am of the opinion that boys are deliberately putting the main switch off or fusing the line in order to get off night study. It is regrettable that some masters are unable to cope with such a situation and play into the hands of the boys. I had to speak to Mr Ghosh about it. In order to make up for the previous nights study and as a form of punishment additional study was held from 4 – 5 pm.
